My wife and I had a simple mission. We were going to go to some local toy shops to get a really good gift for our son, who was turning 5. In our area, the local toy shop had closed, so we drove 81 miles to the nearest Toys R Us.
I am so glad we didn’t bring the kids with us. My wife and I wandered through that toy shop in slack-jawed wonder. First of all, it was a huge store, and it was packed clear to the ceiling with toys, some furniture, and bicycles. In fact, the bicycles were hanging from the ceiling, it was so crowded. It was August, so the summer toys were on sale in the front of the store. There were sand toys, water toys that hooked to the sprinkler, and some life jackets. There were baby swings you could add to an existing swing set, and games for the yard. We kept moving, since summer was almost over.
The baby and toddler section was a little too young for our kids, but we poked around in there anyway. We were assaulted by toys made of vibrant colors, stacked up to the ceiling. The toy shop held teething toys, toys that teach babies their colors, they made animal sounds, or they made music. We took advantage of every toy that had a “poke here to test it out” button, and soon we were serenaded by the sounds of drums, bleating sheep, and serene voices counting 1-2-3.
We moved on the section for little girls. Of course, there was a whole lot of pink going on in there. There were fairies, dolls, toy horses and little pink cars for the dolls to ride around in. Our girl still thinks she’s a boy, and all that pink was getting to me, so we kept moving on.
We were finally to the boys section of the toy shop, and we were ready to get serious about finding the perfect toy for our son. The problem was, we were just overwhelmed by the choices. There were literally dozens of choices in every category. Every kind of toy car track you could think of were there. Box after box full of rescue vehicles, of construction site toys, of everything you could think of.
Ultimately, we left the store without buying anything. We were adults, and we were so overwhelmed we left the toy shop without buying anything. Later that day, we visited a local department store and made a decision after quickly giving their limited stock a look over. If we had taken our son to that toy store, we would have spent all day in there. It still would have been almost impossible to pick out just one thing.
